As for grade deflation, I think that is mostly just people complaining. I haven't had that issue. If you want to see the historic data on the grade distribution for each class Google "Berkeley time" it's a website that has all of the grades for each class from previous semesters.

It is true that getting 3.5 in Berkeley is significantly harder than getting that in Stanford and most (good) grad schools will know this. But if you have <3.3 GPA, no grad school will think "oh that's okay because Berkeley has grade deflation".

Please be aware that only ~16% of freshmen pre-meds actually persist to complete all med school pre-req classes and of those who do persist and actually apply to med school, only about 36-37% get an acceptance. Gaining an acceptance to med school involves much, much more than just having good grades and completing the pre-reqs. I have heard of one professor making an A- a 91.5 instead of a 90, but that’s pretty much about it. Grade deflation does seem worse at Berkeley but I’m not sure. STEM is hard at both schools. However, because most UCLA students do believe that Berkeley has a lot of grade deflation (whether or not Berkeley actually does), they chose UCLA. And I know for a fact that AOs consider the rigor of a high school during freshman admissions, so why would grad not consider the the grade deflation of a college?
